Estate planning, in plain language

Leave things clear for the people you love

An estate plan isn't about the paperwork. It's so the people closest to you aren't guessing at the worst possible moment - about your wishes, your accounts, or who you trusted to decide.

What a complete plan covers

Four documents, four different jobs

Most people think of a will and stop there. A will only speaks after you're gone - three of these four matter while you're still here.

A will

Says who receives what, and who you trust to carry it out.

A living trust

Keeps the estate out of probate court, so nothing is public and nobody waits.

Power of attorney

Names who handles money and property if you're alive but unable to.

Healthcare directive

Puts your medical wishes in writing so no one has to guess.

How it works

Three steps, and you can stop at any point

Tell us about your family

Whether you're married, who depends on you, what you own. Ten minutes, no account.

See what applies to you

A plain-language summary of which documents fit a situation like yours, and what each one does.

Questions people ask

Before you decide

Is this legal advice?

No. This page is general information. The premium packages include consultations with licensed attorneys, and that is where advice about your own situation belongs.

Do I need a lawyer to make a will?

In most states, no, for a straightforward estate - as long as it's signed and witnessed correctly. Complex estates usually do better with one.

Will the documents be valid in my state?

Requirements vary by state, particularly around witnesses and notarization. Documents are prepared for the state you select.

What happens if I do nothing?

Each state has default rules for who inherits when there's no will. They follow a fixed order, and the estate goes through probate court, which is public and takes months.

Does the attorney access renew?

Yes. The plan bundled with the premium packages is a subscription and renews after the first year unless you cancel.
